What's the funniest habit your dog picked up all by themselves?

No matter how much time people spend training their dogs, every dog eventually decides to do things their own way. You can buy the nicest bed in the house, and they'll choose the floor. Spend money on fancy toys, and suddenly their favorite possession is a stick they found on a walk six months ago. Trying to understand the logic behind some of their decisions is usually a lost cause.

Ask any dog owner about their pet, and chances are they'll immediately have a story ready. Some dogs insist on following their humans into every room. Others create strange little routines that nobody understands, but everyone in the house eventually accepts. The funny part is that these habits often start for no obvious reason and somehow become part of the dog's identity.

I always enjoy hearing about stuff like this because everyone is convinced their dog is the weirdest one around. Then a dozen other people share nearly the same story, and you realize dogs everywhere are doing variations of the same nonsense. Apparently, being a lovable weirdo is just part of the job description.

Most of these habits aren't a big deal. They might be mildly inconvenient from time to time, but they're also the things that make people laugh years later. Maybe it's carrying the same toy around all day, demanding attention at the worst possible moment, or treating a completely ordinary household object like it's the greatest treasure on earth.

When people look back on life with their dogs, those are usually the moments they remember most. Not the messes, not the things that got chewed up, but the little quirks that made their dog feel like a one-of-a-kind character. Somehow, those goofy habits end up becoming part of what makes them so easy to love.

  • 96dpi One of my dogs has to have his favorite squeaky toy next to his food bowl when he eats. He started to seek it out, bring it back, and plop it down next to the bowl. If it rolled away he'd go bring it back and fuss with it until it was in the perfect spot. Now we set it up for him every time. He won't eat without it. He's generally high anxiety so it's clearly a comfort thing for him.
